TeenWork is a summer program that helps to transition participating youth into successful, independent young adults by offering a paid work experience within state agencies, private businesses & non-profits.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
- TeenWork is administered through DFCS and was originally designed to support First Lady Perdue’s goal of ensuring that foster youth were equipped with the tools and opportunities to mature into healthy, productive members of society.
- The initiative of TeenWork has expanded to allow for additional leadership and mentorship opportunities for non-foster youth.
- The mission of TeenWork is to provide Georgia youth, ages 14 to 18, valuable work experiences through summer employment opportunities. The program places youth
at various work sites that include local businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies.
ELIGIBILITY
- In foster care, after-care or the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) Program youth
- 14 to 18 years old by June 1, 2010
- Developmental disability
- Able to go through Job Readiness Training prior to beginning job
- Available to work a maximum of 35 hours a week June 1 - July 31
SELECTION PROCESS
- Applicants are selected for a position based on qualifications & based on how well their applications match the stated needs of employers.
- Applicants are matched on a "first come, first served" basis, therefore applying early is advised.
- Foster youth must successfully complete Job Readiness training.
SUPPORT FOR YOUTH & EMPLOYERS
- In addition to the Job Readiness training sessions provided by ILP, the TeenWork staff will continue to work with youth and answer questions throughout the summer.
- We will also provide TeenWork training for all employers, as well as a TeenWork point person.
